Nourish to Flourish

The purpose of this glorious life is not simply to endure it, but to soar, stumble and flourish as you learn to fall in love with existence. We were born to live my dear, not to merely exist.

Oddly Beautiful

Life has an odd (i meant beautiful!) way of making things work out in the end. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Hustle & Heart

If there are two things that I want to define me in my art journey, in my relationship and friendships, in life… it would be heart and hustle. We can have all the love and passion in the world but if we don’t put in the work, we are… how does the Bible say it again?… We are but a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. And oh dear heart, be more than that. 💝

Sometimes it’s difficult to Bloom

Stump here on what to write as a caption. Tempted to go through Pinterest and copy some inspiring quote that would make me look deep. Hahaha. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So I’ll just share what’s in my heart now. And right at this very moment I only have a few words screaming inside me. Honest, raw… and hopefully would still inspire…. Sometimes it’s difficult to bloom.

7. you are the daydream

Finally a blog post! Yay! I could have just made this post and fill it with photos and maybe write a few words on the run … but no, I was so excited for the project that I owe it to the words and work to make a proper post for it.

If you do not know Tyler Kent White… do check out his work on here or his instagram account here. Poet, Spoken word artist, Talented beard man. 🙂

I’ve been following Tyler’s work for more than a year now. I’ve swooned, like hundreds out there, over his writings and how he weaves words together. I am a unabashedly a sucker for beautifully written poetries and prose. So I am so stoked to collaborate on these pieces with Tyler and his handpicked favorite quotes. I hope I did justice to his words by penning them down. I find it really awesome that I write these words I see online that I relate to, and somewhere down the road I get to collaborate with the very people who said these quotes. Beautiful words always come from somewhere. An experience, a heartache, a once in a lifetime memory…. And I feel so grateful that I get to “meet” these creatives and share ideas and work together with them, even in spite of the miles and miles of oceans that separates us.

I hope you enjoy these pieces. 🙂

xx,

Dee

p.s: if you wish to share these images, please credit Souldeelight Creative Space or better yet, share this post. Many thanks!

Here is a sample scan of my handwritten work for one of Tyler’s quotes.

Calligraphy | Hello there , Please take your seat

seatcards02

Among the many things that kept me busy on the calligraphy front, is writing seating cards for weddings and private parties.

There’s something about arriving at your table and seeing your name personally handwritten in a card. Little bits of personal touches that does tie the whole event together. Never underestimate the power of customized pieces to make someone smile.

I’ve been fortunate enough to be on some of these events and see how these  seating cards/escort cards fit into a Midsummer Night’s Gala Night or Gold and Navy themed wedding. I am so grateful to be part of these beautiful celebrations through my calligraphy.

Hello (your name here), please take your seat.

Boudoir | Ann

000

This set should have been blogged a long time ago. And I am so so so glad that I finally did! I remembered how much fun we had taking these images for my dear friend, Ann.

We wanted something sexy but we can not really go all out on wearing barely-there lingerie because it’s a public resort, so we opted to adjust the wardrobe choices to swimwear which turned out quiet well because Ann has always loved the water.

Boudoir isn’t always racy lingerie, thongs, garter belts and see-through lace. Boudoir shots for me are images that makes you feel most comfortable at with your own skin. Sexiness for me isn’t on how much you bare, but more on how much comfort and confidence you exude with whatever you choose to share to the camera. Boudoir can be however you want it to be.

As a photographer, it makes so much difference when you have a genuine connection and rapport with your client. And nothing beats a shoot where everyone is just giggling half of the time.

Also it didnt hurt that after the shoot, we enjoyed some scrumptious Indonesian style nasi lemak, and then followed by hours of deep tissue massage, body scrub and a long bath soak. All that of course reserved for our private eyes only. Hahaha

All in all a good day indeed! Thanks Ann!

Let me in
Surprise me with your humour,
your midnight thoughts,
read to me your letters unanswered,
recite tales untold.

Ease into my arms,
and whisper your fears;
I will consume your poison as my own.

Take me places you’ve never been,
let’s walk down the road unknown
and explore infinity.

Let me catch shooting stars
and hear what you wish for,
So when I sprinkle stardust on your cracks
you’ll see
broken is beautiful.

Family Ties | Welcoming the Twins!

Souldeelight_299

I remembered how humid it was. Hahahaha. Yes. It was such a humid morning when we did this family session for Piradee and her lovely family. But I also remembered how behaved the twins were. I always brace myself when doing shoots involving kids and babies. Because as love filled and fun it could be, tantrums and crying is also very much part of the package. But the twins were such troopers! They seem to not mind being passed from one set of hands to another.

I had a wonderful time taking photographs for this family. This might be one of the biggest family session I’ve had the pleasure of having. Mom, Dad, toddler, twins, two sets of grand parents and aunts and uncles too!

Thank you so much Piradee for trusting me to take your family photos.

love,

Dee

Art to Heart – A Fund Raising Calligiving Project

One of the highlights of my 2015 was when I partnered with the awesome people behind Real Life Foundation. I believe in the beauty of giving back. And when the amazing Pearl Bautista dropped me a message if we could do another one this year, it’s an easy yes for me. I am very proud to be a part of Real Life Foundation and I hope I will be able to do more projects like this one.  And I hope you will join me in being a blessing and in making a difference in someone’s life in our own little way.

And to tell you more about this project, here’s a something from my good friend Pearl Bautista. Hope to see you guys at the workshop and let’s partner up in giving back and making a difference. 🙂

love,

Dee

“It is almost universal to feel compassion whenever we hear of remarkable stories about people who persevered and did everything to change the course of their lives no matter how difficult. Whatever background we come from – nationality, race, belief, or faith – we feel touched, moved, and at times in awe of how some people can have so much persistence despite having the odds stacked against them.

Try watching this video from igivetolife.com , which features some of the most heart-wrenching life stories of Real Life Foundation scholars. Their struggles will help you understand what I mean.

Such scenarios are particularly special to me as I, for one, had a taste of how it was to struggle with the thought of not being able to go to school the next day due to financial issues. Coming from a big family, I have witnessed how my parents worked so hard to try to make ends meet just so they could send me and my four other siblings to school all at the same time. Like the students in the video, our hope to make things better on the financial side lied on getting an education.

Looking back, I can’t imagine what kind of life we would be facing had we not pursued our studies. Apart from my parents’ love and dedication, my only indication of hope that things will be better was the fact that I was still able to go to school everyday and together as a family we are overcoming our situation. It was this experience that made me not hesitate to help those who are struggling with the same situation as I was.

This brings me to four years ago when myself and a bunch of very good friends were given the opportunity to sponsor a student via Real Life Foundation. We started a yearly fundraiser for Melody – our adopted scholar. For three years, we were organizing dance sessions we entitled “I Wanna Dance for Zumbady”, where we sold tickets and donated the proceeds to the scholarship fund for Melody. Year after year, we would be totally awed by people’s generosity to give to the fund. Not to mention, participants had fun dancing and of course meeting new people.

Last year, apart from Zumba, we partnered with Dee Capulan of Souldeelight to provide Calligiving sessions or calligraphy workshops for a cause. It was certainly deelightful (pun intended) to witness a new group of people get involved in this benefit, and at the same time, see them enjoy this wonderful art of hand lettering taught by the ever passionate Dee. And if you must know, it was our best year yet in terms of total funds raised.

This 2016, we are excited to put together two Calligiving sessions to raise funds for the fourth and final year of Melody. It’s weird, but we feel like parents extremely looking forward to sending a daughter to her last year in the university. We couldn’t help but feel amazed at how her once impossible dream of getting a university degree is now becoming a reality.

With this, I humbly invite you to experience the joy of doing something not for yourself but to make someone else’s life better. Your giving is more than sending the scholars to school, or providing them with lunch money; it is an act of love and of shedding hope so that they may face a brighter tomorrow.

Singapore Portraits | Of Sisterhood and Birthdays

Donna _096

There are photo sessions that I enjoy not just for the time I’ve spent with whoever is in front of my camera. But more so of the story behind them.

A couple of months before the scheduled shoot, Charmaine (who have always been supportive of my work, THANK YOU ma’am Cha!), dropped me a message and checked if we can do a SURPRISE portrait session for her sister for her 40th birthday.

She told me how she’d always looked up to Donna. And just listening how she described her sister, brings so much joy to me. There is something about the bond of sisterhood that speaks of unbreakable link. It reminded me of how proud I am of my one and only sister. How I’ve taken her photographs many number of times. And to be a part of a surprise gift of love, from one sister to another, it is such a privilege. So when Charmaine asks, it was an easy yes.

When I met Donna on the afternoon of the shoot. She kept on telling me how she wanted to backout. Hahaha. She was so shy… at the start. But you can see how excited she was and how loved she felt. I had such a great time taking her portrait shots.

Thank you Donna for not backing out! Hahaha. You looked so natural in front of the camera! Here’s a little note from your sister Charmaine. May you always feel loved, cherished and treasured. Happy 40th beautiful!

Dear Ate Donna,

I never would have known before that I will be  writing down a love letter (we can call it that 🙂 ) on your 40th birthday.

What I’ve always known though is that …

Every time I sneak out or extend longer in school, you’re right in our room waiting to bark at me and, with no bounds, tell daddy how I stayed out late chatting up with friends.

Each time I set the alarm clock to 4am, you’ll surely be nagging me on why can’t I be any diligent at night to finish up my book and be prepared for the next day.

On those times that I dilly dally laundries, dishes and other house chores, you’re on my toes paving me to get up and finish fast what’s undone.

On to many occasions that I’ve mispronounced, misspelled, misused words… you are always there to correct me. Encouraging me to  improve my English,by heart,  just so it doesn’t displease you (that’s how I’ve felt then, tsk! But now, I know better)

Oh not to miss those times that you kept running around reminding me of my school ID, coins for the jeepney fares, my T-square and other stuff which I tend to forget every time i rush out to school.

I realized how each of these loving sisterly acts prepared me well in this life. Thank you.

For you … who’s celebrating your 40th,  I thank you for letting me be a part of the many wonderful things you have conquered in your 40 years. And I cannot thank Jesus more for gifting me with such a wonderful sister.

Happy 40th ate Donna!!

Enjoy and continue to age gracefully. May God always guide you and protect you. Continue to be a blessing to everyone around you. We love you always.

Stubborn Hope

Papermarket_Feb

“There is so much stubborn hope in the human heart”

{Albert Camus}

Hope is a dangerous thing.

It triggers our reflex to survive the bleakest hours.

To grasp on any thread of silver lining.

And it gives us butterflies that say… things will fall into place.

Someway, somehow.

And I think that’s a beautiful thing. Usually.

But it tends to consume us when left unchecked.

And that can be both dangerous and beautiful.

Family Ties | The Alix Family

What a day! Thank you so much Alix Family for filling my afternoon with so much laughter during our session.
And the boys… oh my gosh the boys… who needs a workout if I can run after you and take never ending photographs!

I want to be that place you go to when you think you have lost a home. I want to be that home you rest in when the other doors have closed. I want to be that good night sleep when your mind tosses and turn. I want to be that place that keeps your soul at ease when your feet is lifted off ground.

Excerpt from my moonstruck memoir #2 by Ming D. Liu

A sneak peek of my time spent with Kevin and Liisa. And I wish most shoots would start like this… in bed. Hahaha. Kidding. Thank you Kevin and Liisa! I had such a good time with you two. Thank you especially for wrapping the shoot with an impromptu song and dance number. You guys are awesome!

Souldeelight Workshop | Flourish and Florals

Flourish&Florals-38

I had such a great time on my September workshops! For the month of September I partnered with Patricia from Fancy Girl Design Studio (@patfancygirl) for a two in one workshop of Modern Calligraphy and Watercolor Florals… .Flourish and Florals! Every workshop I do is a unique one. I am not just saying that to “entice” people to sign up. Each and every workshop I do, for me,  is unique and special and memorable in it’s own way. It has always been like that since the very first one I did. That has kept me from feeling burned out and jaded about what I do. That may come off as naivety to some who are more seasoned in the business side of art.  But so far, this mindset is working for me, so I’ll keep on it.

Anyway, before I digress.. haha! .. I’ve always been wanting to do a workshop together with Patricia. I’ve been a fan of her watercolor projects and she’s always my go to girl when it comes to web design. We’ve been talking about doing workshops together but our schedules too so long to cooperate! When it finally did, we sold out our first workshop in just 24 hours after announcement. And because of requests, we have to open another one. To say that we are grateful will be an understatement.

I am grateful for the people I meet through my creative journey. I am a big fan of learning new things. I am a self-taught creative and I love sharing whatever I know especially to those who’ve never tried calligraphy before. Hahaha seeing the smile on their face when they hear that scratching sound of nibs on paper. Eureka!

My biggest thank you to Vanessa of VeeLoved , for taking these wonderful photos during the workshop. And another big Thank you to my good friend Michelle, who spend time assisting me during the class. A big Thank You as well to another dear friend, Cher , who dropped by during the Sept 5 class to show and share with us some of her work. She is super talented in drawing portraits. She was generous enough to give out a free portrait to one of the participants of the class! And she also did a portrait of me ! Look how good she is! She made me look human!! (That’s not an easy feat! Haha). I am truly blessed with friends.  And I am truly grateful for them.

Anyway, less words, more photos…

xx,

Dee

I can’t wait to share my favorite shots from my session with this lovely family.

Theirs was one of my scheduled Family Sessions that got postponed due to the the crazy haze that’s been engulfing Singapore for the past weeks. And what a wonderful time I had taking photograph of this oh-my-goodness adorable little girl who just keeps on saying my name the whole time, “Deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee”. <3

She is such a cutie pie. I took waaaaaaayyyy more photos than usual. This is always the case when a session is going so well. Everybody is having a good time and each laugh, hug, kiss, smile and gesture just begs to be photographed.

Thank you P. Family for spending an afternoon with me.

Calligraphy Giveaway | Pursue Passion

“Be Fearless in the pursuit

of what sets your soul on fire”

So I  hosted a little giveaway last friday over at Instagram. And I wanna do it again!

I posted that I’m giving away this original piece, not a print copy, of one very inspiring quote that reminds us not to dismiss the things that fuel our soul. I am more than happy to send it anywhere in the world ?.

For the takers,  all they have to do is leave a comment below the IG post an answer to my question  : “What fuels your soul, what’s your passion, what daydreams do you have for YOURSELF… I’m curious.”

I will include a little something when I do send it out.

I was so inspired by the the answers I got, and I picked more than one! So plot twist, these lovely people can pick whatever they want me to write. Something that is more personal to them. Thank you again for joining in my little giveaway!

Here are some of the comments I got : (so you’ll understand why it is so hard to pick!

Feed my soul by helping kids and generally people that need help. Dream to be a social worker to help the kids.

@souldeelight Playing with my son, hearing him laugh, or watching him discover new things. It’s amazing how one little boy is so powerful to me. ?❤️

Listening to my soul speak as I explore my artistic side creatively by learning how to express myself through this journey of self discovery with mixed media, photography, and watercolor. ?

Hi D, i’m fuelled by love…love for my family, love for myself, my friends and above all love for God. And I’m so passionate about all things I love 🙂 At any given time I daydream about writing something that will have a huge impact in society…still working at it though 🙂

Hello @souldeelight ☺️ Not sure if this giveaway is still ongoing, but shall try because I will really love to own a piece by you as I have been fangirling and feeling inspired by your writings ? I’ve never been especially good in anything and have always been a jack of all trades and master of none but calligraphy is a new hobby that I’ve discovered recently that I really want to be good in. The thought of gifting my friends with meaningful quotes and words in my own writings and the thought that these words may actually spur them on make me really motivated to bring this hobby to the next level! Also, I will really love to travel around the world, especially to SEA countries, taking portraits of locals and show beauties of some places that may have been underrated by people previously ? And to take photos of my writings against the backdrop of such beautiful sceneries. I think words and writings and sceneries are such wonderful combination ? I also love to capture candid happy moments of my friends, especially with their smiles and happiness caught in a frame, it is really wonderful being behind the camera sometimes! Ahh sorry for rambling on but it has been a great pleasure sharing and allowed me to do a little bit if self-reflection to reaffirm my passion and beliefs ☺️ Hope to take one of your workshops very soon and I can’t wait to learn personally from you, it will be such a great honor! Have a good Sunday ahead! ❤️

Hello little miss T, you are every bit a princess and very much a spunky royalty. Happy Birthday Month!

Family Ties | Beautiful Before and Afters

souldeelight_jackie_pt1_023x

I am swimming in photos to work on… happily swimming in them, if I may add. I can’t wait to update this space with things that’s been happening with Souldeelight. Calligraphy, Photography, Plans, Dreams, Projects… sometimes I wish I could just burst and everything will just fall in their rightful place. But like many things, things that are worth it, sometimes they take their time finding their sweet spot.  If you are reading this, and you’ve traveled with me through each small step I’ve taken… THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK YOU.

I can’t wait to share the beautiful sessions I did for Jackie and her amazing gang called Family. <3 This would be the most beautiful Before and After I took to date. What could be more beautiful than capturing the anticipation of a baby bump to welcoming the new addition with so much love.

So much love captured in the eyes of a mother, a father, a brother and the most giggly sister the world has ever known. So much love felt, that for a moment all is right in the world. <3

I can’t wait to share their whole set soon. x

x,
Dee

Nuggets of Bravery

Brave_1100px

It’s been said that courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear.

A couple of close friends who are very dear to me has been going through some tough times lately. None of their situations is ever easy.  It’s not a position which anyone would wish on another.   One friend reminds me of the time when I was at her exact position.  When I can’t even bear the thought of what tomorrow holds because it scares me to the core. And how grateful I am to have overcome that.  And another friend,  made me reflect on what my actions would be if,  God forbid,  I will find myself in her shoes.

One thing that comforts me though,  and what I also share with these wonderful people who are going through tough times….  They will be over sooner than you think.  To take it one day at a time.  That tomorrow has enough troubles of its own and we don’t have to consume ourselves with its burdens right now.  That it’s OK if our strength would only last for a day.  That we are tougher than we think.  Even if at times we don’t believe that.  We should give our hearts more credit.

One day at a time.  One quivering step at a time.  One deep breath at a time.  Do it anyway, that’s bravery.

To my dear friends and to you,  who’s going through some tough times now….  Tough times don’t last long.  But we will.

Couplehood | Engagement | John and Aileen, the Dears

john_ai_145

” When you realize how perfect everything is,

you will tilt your head back, and laugh at the sky”

– some wise guy

Yes, I write on my clients photographs. Sometimes I can’t help it. Sometimes a pinch of words ties the whole thing together. Sometimes, their photos just speaks happy and I can’t help but write on them. Like I said, sometimes, I can’t help it.

I think it’s a beautiful thing when we are caught up in a moment of “we can’t help it”. Don’t you agree?

Like… when we can’t help but laugh, we can’t help but smile, we can’t help but cry, we can’t help but love. The rawest form of emotion is such a beautiful thing. The unguarded is sublime. The unplanned is pure joy. I hope most of our days will be filled with unguarded, unplanned and sublime we-can’t-help beautiful moments. Those kinds of memories are good for the soul.

<3

Thankfully these two, John and Aileen, radiates happiness and just the right amount of crazy during our shoot and even after. When I saw Ai’s gown, I literally wanted to cry out of joy. It’s this big ball of fuffyness but very elegant and very classy… and very timeless. It’s like taking a page out of a fairytale book. Yes, that’s how I would describe how these two styled themselves during their engagement session.

This is the first half of their engagement photos. Weather wasn’t playing too nice with us that weekend, so we were only able to do the first half. I can’t wait to meet with these two again and enjoy a good laugh while we take photographs. Really, how can one go wrong with laughter? 🙂

Dear John and Aileen. Thank You. You made working with you two the easiest thing.

xx,

Dee

Calligraphy | Give Thanks

GiveThanks Souldeelight

Hurray for long weekends! Three day weekend on our side of the world right now. Happy to report that I’ve been pretty productive and still able to enjoy a good amount of R&R.  Never say no to a good chance to chill. Yes? 🙂  Anyway, so here is my attempt to summarize what I’ve been up to for the past 3 days. Nothing life changing sadly, haha, but not bad as part of my daily grind.

Saturday was spent jumping from one get together after another. Afternoon barbeque with friends and their adorable baby boy turning 1! (Happy Birthday Aidan!! xx). Early evening, chilling by the poolside overlooking the National Stadium and watched the light display and fireworks as they practice for the Asian Sea Games opening. Then rushed to Spruce, just in time to enjoy a glass of wine and cap the night with good friends and celebrate Kay’s birthday. Can I just say I love how we have this old firestation converted into a cafe, just 10 minutes from our place?!

Sunday morning I found myself at Spruce again, for a private Calligraphy session with Christine. And it didn’t feel like a class because we hit it off instantly. We talked about solo traveling, tattoo’s , relationships, diet plans (hah!! hahaha), friendship, creative classes and a whole lot more… all while she was practicing her upstrokes and downstrokes and rediscovering the alphabet calligraphy style. I really didn’t do much because she is so good already for a beginner!

I wished my work was that neat when I was still starting out. Haha!

After my class, I went to Arteastic meet the amazingly talented Patricia of Fancy Girl Designs. We are concocting something creative for all of you, and I am so excited to have this collaboration with her. It is always a wonderful time whenever I spend time with Patricia. We talked about our not so secret dream of owning our own letterpress machine. A girl can dream. LOL. Exchanged stories of our favorite clients, freelance artists we follow, what inspires us, our affinity to munch when finishing something in the wee hours of the night/morning.

She did a sketch of me which she posted in Instagram, and I was grinning from ear to ear when I finally got the finish painting from her. She made me looked human and I love LOVE love this portrait. Thank You Fancy Girl! Oh the perks of having talented friends.

Remember I said something about diet plans? Yeah…. you  heard wrong. LOL.

Thank you Patricia!!! Yours Truly sketched and painted by the talented Patricia of Fancy Girl Designs.

Sketch and Paint by Fancy GirlIMG_20150601_222739

Monday found me being super lazy at home. My bed refused to let go of me and I am, as always, a willing victim.  Purposely didn’t go out. Late afternoon I was bringing out paints,  brushes and nibs. A good friend who is getting married in 10 days time, “assigned” *cough cough* me to do their thank you cards to go along with their wedding favors. And when it comes to doing projects for friends, I feel like nothing is ever good enough. See below the evolution of the design. I am so pleased that they are both happy with the result and can’t wait to give the happy couple my little labor of LOVE. 🙂

So I was about to start writing, and a friend of mine who fancies himself the King of Zombies was chatting with me. When asked what I was doing, i thought it’s best to send out a demo rather than a proper answer ;-P

IMG_20150531_220717

So the beta version started with loads of scribbles…. and I mean loads. Actually it’s more like just doing wrist exercise hahaha… Did you spot my rubber duckie?

IMG_20150531_201343

And then inspiration struck and I hand painted a wreathe, scanned it,  printed it in thick archival quality textured board, and handwrite a few more samples. Oh lala wet Ink!

IMG_20150601_164854~01

Then I tried to mix gouache colors to make my own ink… only to realized after I was done with the mix that I still have that oh-so-beautiful yellow gold ink in my stash which I haven’t used for awhile. And for those who are interested, I used the blue pumpkin nib for these babies 🙂 Just look at that GOLD!

IMG_20150601_200515

And finally, the final product. 🙂

And yes, each card will be handwritten. *flexes hand muscles* LOL

IMG_20150601_184347

And because I believe that one can never find a miserable grateful person, thought I’d close the day writing this one.

You can download a free copy of the card here.

Thank you for reading. Hope your weekend was filled with loads of moments to be grateful for.

“The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera.”
~ Dorothea Lange

I love taking portraits. I’ve had opportunities, assignments and fun shoots where I/we photograph landscapes and products. But my eyes will always look for faces. I look for that sense of connection in a person’s expression. I was searching for a set of past photographs the other night, and I stumbled on a few old portraits I took a couple of years back.  I went through them and picked out some that I thought I would want to share here in my new online home.  So grateful for everyone who became my willing victim for these shoots…. kidding! 🙂

I would love to believe I’m a dreamer. Yes I am a doer, I don’t just sit around waiting for things to happen. But at the core, everything starts out with a dream. And as someone who just really loves to take photos, I have a list of portraits I would LOVE to be able to take in my lifetime. I have that list tucked away somewhere in my online drawer, and once in awhile I add to it, and I cross some items out.

Seeing some of the photos I did in the past, I was reminded as well of how my style changed and yet still stays the same even after a few years. From vivid colors, the treatment on how I post process images, the mood that speaks to me… it changed a lot. And I love how it changed, because it means I was rediscovering and reinventing myself as I enjoy this journey of taking photographs. I have so many “bad” photos, but I kept most of them because they serve as a reminder on where and how I would want to improve. Isn’t that what Henri Cartier-Bresson once said, “Your first 10,000 photographs are your worst.” How true, if we truly love something (or someone! hah! **sappy sappy**) we will always try to be better because something good deserves nothing but our best.

But one thing never changed, I would always choose to take photographs of expressions and faces and emotions. I don’t think I will ever outgrow that. I will still take photos of anything that moves, because I truly find happiness clicking my camera away…. but given the choice, I will take portraits, and to see the beauty in everything…. and hopefully show my subject the beauty that I see in them.

“Life is your art.
An open, aware heart is your camera.
A oneness with your world is your film.
Your bright eyes and easy smile is your museum.”
~ Ansel Adams

An Ode to Loneliness

The most amazing thing we can do for ourselves is be our own hero. From the archives, written more than  4 years ago.  Never ever be stuck being a victim of whatever it is that holds us back.

Eat Pray Love’s Elizabeth Gilbert, once quoted, “When I get lonely these days, I think: So BE lonely, Liz. Learn your way around loneliness. Make a map of it. Sit with it, for once in your life. Welcome to the human experience. But never again use another person’s body or emotions as a scratching post for your own unfulfilled yearnings.

This line floated back to me while surrounded by faceless strangers in the metro. Not because I was sad but more of there are moments when I get reminded how it was to be truly lonely. Just a reminder of moments. Nothing more than a reminder. I remembered somehow vividly that no longer a stranger feeling slowly wrapping it’s arms around me in an all too familiar embrace. Oh… I know this touch so well. Hello there old friend, miss me?

Loneliness,  yes, that’s your all too familiar name. I’m afraid I have known you too well in the past years. Which I thankfully now call my previous life. I know your morning breath down to your steady rhythmic snore. We’ve became bedfellows. Strange bedfellows at that,  but you’ve cuddled me down to my every curve. The dip in my hips, the beating in my chest, that soft spot at the base of my neck.  We’ve became lovers.  I don’t want to know you this well,  but like memories,  I do not really have the luxury to be picky on which ones to remember  and which ones to forget.

But I appreciate you Loneliness. Because I don’t remember faces and feelings any longer. What I do remember, is you allowing me to take my time being nursed by you,  and then letting me go when I’ve finally had my fill.

I don’t get scared of you any more. Because you made me understand why you needed to happen,  and why I needed to let you happen. Only then did I truly feel alive. To live… is to decide to live not just exist. Decision is the line that I needed to consciously make on my own.

So now that once in awhile you come visit me. I join you in the porch and we stare into empty space. Not talking, just feeling and sharing an occasional sigh… and smile. But this time, I accompany you,  no longer you keeping me company. And I know, that anytime I want to,  I can easily just stand and leave. And it will no longer feel like I’m dragging balls and chains as I take each step. I know I can easily take each step painlessly,  because I’ve somehow embraced doing so at my own pace.  It felt like freedom.

And I feel you smile because you understood,  that it was no longer like the last time. It is no longer like the last time.

…I fell in love the way you fall asleep:

slowly, and then all at once.

~John Green, The Fault in Our Stars

I had one amazing time with Marlon and Maricris for their engagement shoot. It’s one of those sessions where you just forgot about time because everyone is having fun. We went to places which hold a special meaning to them both. The university library, the school grounds, the tracks. It’s the simple beautiful spaces yet brings back beautiful thoughts whenever they think about it.

Doing couple sessions always makes me hope that love is still alive. I’m a silly romantic fool. That once in awhile while we are busy with our lives, it will find us, tickle us, and make us smile like silly… while thinking of that somebody who feels the same way when he/she thinks about us. Love is a miracle, not because it conquers everything. It’s a miracle, because out of all the people in the world… two hearts decides to choose each other. To decide to open your one and only heart , to decide to  show your vulnerability, to decide to stay and hold on to each other…. that is the greatest miracle of all.

Thank you Marlon and Maricris.

“I have learned that to be with those I like is enough”
~Walt Whitman

Back at home we used this Spanish phrase “Buena Mano”, it means good hand, or better yet the first “sale of the day” in business context, which will hopefully bring good luck for the rest of day. Another belief or tradition that is silently accepted is that pregnant women represents luck.  So what better way to start off filling up my new space than with images from the recent shoot I did for Aloha and Brian and their upcoming new addition, Baby Luke! (Hahahah which as of this writing, popped out already and greeted the world with a loud cry! Welcome Baby Luke!).

Aloha and Brian are my first clients for 2015, and I couldn’t ask for a better way to start off my photography journey for this year. There was so much laughter and I’m so excited for them and their growing family.

Thank you Brian and Aloha for trusting me to take your first ever family portraits. And thank you for starting my photography journey for the year right. The future is pregnant with possibilities, I can’t wait to see all of them unfold.

SONS Bacaro : Going Italian

Disclaimer: After writing this, I realized it sounded like a paid advertisement. Haha! But I swear there is no money exchanged for this write up. I promise! But if you know me, you know I can easily be bribed with something pretty on the plate. Just kidding!

To my Italian readers, I’m sure you will find mistakes in the translation. Please don’t kill me, feel free to let me know and you can put 90% of the blame to Google Translate.  LOL!

{ Disconoscimento: Dopo aver scritto questo, Mi sono reso conto che sembrava un annuncio a pagamento. Haha! Ma giuro,non ci sono soldi scambiate per questo articolo. Mi prometto! Ma se tu mi conosci, Posso essere facilmente corrotto con qualcosa di bello su un piatto. Solo scherzando!}

Haha.

For those who know me well, they would know that (1) I enjoy good food, especially topped with awesome conversations with loved ones, and that (2) I admire people who are happily passionate in what they do. So imagine my delight when we finally did this session at the new and must try Italian place &Sons Bacaro: Cocktail and Wine Bar, Salami Bar, Cheese Room and Italian Kitchen, with some behind the scenes shots of Chef Riccardo Catarsi, the Executive Sous Chef at &Sons. They just opened their doors early December 2013, and from the looks of it, this bacaro is here to stay.

You can only expect quality and excellence, knowing that this is another brainchild of the famous restaurateur Beppe de Vito, the man behind the award winning Italian fine dining destination, Sentosa’s Il Lido, and the Latteria Mozzarella Bar over at Duxton Hill, who I had the pleasure of meeting when I had dinner at &Sons with my close friends. The man can seem to do no wrong when it comes to coming up with delicious food and new places to try for food lovers.

Having covered a wedding at the posh and stylish Il Lido, with the perfect view of Sentosa Golf Club and the sunset over South China Sea (for guys who wants to pop the question, this place should definitely be on your list!), &Sons Bacaro provides a more hip, vibrant and casual feel. A bacaro by definition is a typical Venetian bar furnished with tables and benches, where one can enjoy a relaxing meal without spending a fortune. And &Sons definitely hit the nail in the head when it comes to cosy and feel-at-home vibe, but not forgetting that touch of subtle Italian elegance, which they did so effortlessly.

The navy blue and dark wood finish, with touches of gold, created a classic feel to the place. Reminds me of old Hollywood vibe, classic chic. (Insert photographer nerdy thoughts: And I secretly clapped with joy with the skylight ceiling they have inside. Dark interior tones and diffused natural creamy light coming in from above… oh be still my heart! Perfect Light.)

Luce perfetto!)

It’s easy to imagine private events being hosted at &Sons. And with the young and vibrant staff, you will instantly feel at home. I know I did!

Dine inside or enjoy the experience al fresco style. People watch (haha!) or enjoy a quiet evening with friends or your date (score!). It’s a place to chill with style. A big part of why I love what I do is because I enjoy it tremendously when I get to photograph people doing what they are most passionate about. Be it photographing a couple, a family, a yoga teacher, a ballet dancer or doing corporate headshots for a CEO running a multi-million dollar company… I often find it fascinating when they get lost in what they do, that they forget I am there. And the shoot becomes more real and authentic.

Passion is contagious and admirable. And couple that with years of discipline, one can only expect a way above than ordinary result. And what can be more intimately passionate than having to hand pick ingredients, put them all together and come up with savoury art on a plate, and serve this to someone to enjoy. A delectable work of heart.

And at &Sons, the man at the helm is Chef Riccardo Catarsi. The spotless kitchen is his turf. Armed with pots, pans, knives and an array of fresh produce, a salami bar and assortment of imported cheeses. He got everything he need. Rolling up his chef sleeves he got down into business. I watched in avid fascination as he created everything from scratch, meticulously checking on every detail on what goes on the plate. Conversation floated while he cooks and I take photos. There was a story being told on a plate. The purist form of edible art.

Personally, i believe when you truly love what you do, you can not help but leave a bit of you in whatever you are creating. Like an artist with his painting, a photographer with HER images, or a chef in the kitchen with his creation.

I think it is safe to say, there is a little bit of the chef on a plate.

Sometimes he will pause to find the exact word in English of what he is describing, so I said he can just talk in Italian and I will pretend I understand. And he did! Haha! But it really was funny when he suddenly stopped talking and said, “Now I don’t know how to say it in Italian!”.

Every item on the dish has a purpose, beautifully plated and a feast for our tastebuds. I wish I could take photos of what something taste like, but sadly I can’t …But take my word for it, and the words of their growing patrons, the food is worth the visit.  So for the sake of this blog, I will just make do of the photographs I took during my kitchen confidential session at &Sons Bacaro.

Yes! Chefs can be goofy too! (Sì! Chefs possono essere goofy troppo!)

Each time I have the chance of dining at &Sons, I have nothing but good praises for the people behind it. And my friends, Rachel and Ann, can attest to this when we had our girly get together before going for Christmas holidays. From the chef, the kitchen staff, the manager, the wait staff , to the guy who mixes your drinks… everyone treats you with respect and makes sure you have the best dining experience.

I would like to quote Chef Riccardo (because I think it is worth sharing), “It takes a team that works so well together to make the bacaro the way it is. I have trusted sous chefs Andrea de Paola and Richie Tam, and every single person behind &Sons working hard to give our diners the best experience. These guys are my friends. And now my family.”

It tells alot about a man, when he is grateful for the people who surrounds him. It does not only get the work done, but it makes doing the work an enjoyable one.

The way I see it,  it’s like a perfectly cooked meal. Every little bit of ingredient adding it’s own unique taste, resulting into something you don’t just enjoy eating but actually sing praises about.

Oh and did I mention that most of the people at &Sons Bacaro are Italians? How much more authentic  can you get? 🙂

Buon Appetito!

always,

Dee

Family Ties | Singapore | The little Jedi called Samuel

I love how this Family portrait shoot rolled out. Jeng dropped me a message at the start of the year to book me to take some photos of Samuel. Though the details were still a bit fuzzy, understandably, but they were very sure already that they wanted a Star Wars theme for Samuel’s shoot. Jeng hand sewed this little Jedi’s costume. If that is not dedication, I don’t know what is. 🙂

One thing I’ve noticed when I am really having so much during a shoot, I tend to go overboard taking photos, here are some of my favorites. And with Samuel, it just made my job so easy. I mean, look at those cheeks! Oh My!

Thank you so much Ping and Jeng for trusting me to take your family photos. And happy birthday dearest little Obi Wan Kenobi! May the force of the universe always be with you little Jedi Sam.

I had a wonderful time doing this couple session for Maria and Jose. My first Venezuelan couple! Hurray! It was their first “child free” vacation after a long long time (Thank God Singapore is one of their stop!)  and they wanted to remember the most from the trip … so they booked a shoot! How sweet is that?

You wouldn’t have guessed that they’ve been married for 11 years now. The passion and love is so crisp and tangible, it’s a crime not to take a snap shot of it.

Muchas Gracias Jose and Maria… you both are an inspiration. More love to you both!

p.s: And Maria found me through google search! double yay! 🙂

Always,

Dee

Couplehood | Nathaniel & Chat – A Christmas Romance

“I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where.
I love you simply, without problems or pride:
I love you in this way because I do not know
any other way of loving but this,
in which there is no I or you,
so intimate that your hand upon my chest is my hand,
so intimate that when I fall asleep your eyes close.”

I am so grateful that Chat and Nat (aka Nathaniel) trusted me to cover their wedding. When Chat first dropped me a message many many months ago, they didn’t have a definite date yet or a location for the wedding. But there were two things that they were sure of: it’s gonna be in December and that the theme will be Ruby Red and Gold. With that in mind, my heart silently did a little dance and  looked forward to taking photographs of this Christmas Romance.

There was an abundance of Love and laughter all throughout the day. Family flying in to celebrate with the couple. And friends who tirelessly helped Chat bring to life her dream wedding. It was an intimate celebration with so many tears, happy tears, from the moms of both the bride and groom. For Chat’s side, it was her aunt, but I believe she should be called a mom :). These two single handedly made  the whole room bring out those hankies and tissues. For a sentimental fool like me, I am no match to the heartfelt and tearful speeches of the moms. More than once I found tears blurring my eyes hahaha. (Dear future clients, please do not worry, I will not make a fool of myself during your wedding. Please book me. Hahaha).

Chat’s Vivian Gown was beautifully elegant and one can really appreciate the workmanship behind it. Maybe it is because I’m a girl, but I always feel the bride’s gown right before I take a photo of it. And the silhouette of Chat’s gown would make every girl sigh.

Anyway, this is a lengthy post with less words but filled with some of my favorite images from Chat and Nat’s special day. I hope you will enjoy and do leave me some love in the comment section, I love hearing from you guys.

To Chat and Nat, thank you. May you always be blessed in your marriage and always will be a blessing and inspiration to others. **Throwing Confetti**

Dee

Landslide

I took my love and I took it down
I climbed a mountain and I turned around
And I saw my reflection in the snow covered hills
‘Till the landslide brought me down
Oh, mirror in the sky

What is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail thru the changing ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?

Well, I’ve been afraid of changing
‘Cause I’ve built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Children get older
I’m getting older too

So, take my love, take it down
Oh climb a mountain and turn around
If you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well the landslide will bring you down, down

And If you see my reflection in the snow covered hills
Well maybe the landslide will bring it down
Oh oh, the landslide will bring it down

People think dreams aren’t real

just because they aren’t made of matter, of particles.

Dreams are real.

But they are made of viewpoints,

of images, of memories and puns and lost hopes.

~ Neil Gaiman

One of the many life gifts that we often take forgranted is the gift to start over. The amazing gift of a clean slate. The ability to write again on how we want to write our story. We often take this forgranted. In the busyness of our day, in the chaos of whatever demands of our time and our thoughts, we often find ourselves either stuck in a rut or sucked in cycle of endless humdrum.

We don’t have to rewrite the whole book. Even just the chapter we are currently living. We might not have a choice on the plot twists, but we do have a choice on how the main hero of the story (us!) would live it.The beauty of starting over is that we can start ANYTIME WE WANT, and anyway we want.

The only catch with starting over is… we have to be ready to hope. We have to ready your heart to believe that something amazing might just happened. Sneaky little thing this fella called Hope.  It latches in your heart and make you believe…. even when the world tells you not to. No wonder they call it having faith.

Thank you for being here. I am starting over in my little home in this corner of the web, and new beginnings as well in my personal life. Only apt that I do this at the start of the year. And like anyone who is in the starting line, I’m a little apprehensive yet very excited, and yes Hopeful. Hopeful that in the coming days, this space will be filled with stories and thoughts and laughter and surprises. So here’s to starting over, and to bringing with us our own sparkle wherever we go.

And I would like to give a special shout out to two amazingly gifted and creative ladies who helped made this online home ready for public consumption, hahaha. Thank you so so much to the design Diva Patricia of Fancy Girl Design Studio. And to Jenn who was so patient on setting the domain transfer from my old host. Thank you both!
